Industry Profile

Canadian excellence in nuclear science and technology spans 60 years and features one of the most significant concentrations of nuclear R&D, technical and industrial capability in the world. Specifically in the field of nuclear power generation, Canada's nuclear industry features 150 firms in engineering, construction, nuclear power plant operation and maintenance, component manufacturing, fuel fabrication and fuel cycle solutions, business services and equipment and service providers. These companies offer specialized capabilities that support the generation of nuclear power from 18 CANDU nuclear reactors throughout Canada accounting for 14.6 percent of Canada's electricity generation, including 51 percent of Ontario's power needs. As of 2008, nuclear power is produced in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick. A recent report by the Canadian Energy Research Institute (CERI) states that nuclear energy is a $6.6 billion/year industry with exports of $1.2 billion, and direct employment of 21 000, indirect employment of 10 000, and an additional spin-off effect of 40 000 jobs.
